Bankruptcy and Consumer Proposal Statistics

On July 31, 2017, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian debtors.

Canada

There were 61,016 personal bankruptcies and 62,873 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended May 31, 2017. Bankruptcies were down 4.9% and consumer proposal filings were up 4.1% as compared to the 12-months ended May 31, 2016.

 

New Brunswick

There were 2,725 personal bankruptcies and 1,690 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended May 31, 2017. Bankruptcies were down 6.2% and consumer proposal filings were up 13.8% as compared to the 12-months ended May 31 2016.

 

Nova Scotia

There were 4,119 personal bankruptcies and 1,902 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended May 31, 2017. Bankruptcies were up 6.1% and consumer proposal filings were up 17.9% as compared to the 12-months ended May 31, 2016..

 

Prince Edward Island

There were 449 personal bankruptcies and 302 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended May 31, 2017. Bankruptcies were down 12.6% and consumer proposal filings were up 2.7% as compared to the 12-months ended May 31, 2016.
