April 2019 – Personal Bankruptcy & Consumer Proposal Statistics

On June 3, 2019, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian debtors.

Canada – there were 54,714 personal bankruptcies and 73,397 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended April 30, 2019.  Personal bankruptcies were down 3.3% and consumer proposal filings were up 11.2% as compared to the 12-months ended April 30, 2018.  There were 4,863 personal bankruptcies and 6,922 consumer proposal filed in Canada in the month of April 2019.

New Brunswick – there were 2,331 personal bankruptcies and 2,339 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended April 30, 2019.  Personal bankruptcies were up 0.3% and consumer proposal filings were up 17.1% as compared to the 12-months ended April 30, 2018.  There were 214 personal bankruptcies and 213 consumer proposal filed in New Brunswick in the month of April 2019.

Nova Scotia – there were 3,465 personal bankruptcies and 2,223 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended April 30, 2019.  Personal bankruptcies were down 4.2% and consumer proposal filings were up 11.2% as compared to the 12-months ended April 30, 2018.  There were 290 personal bankruptcies and 211 consumer proposal filed in Nova Scotia in the month of April 2019.

Prince Edward Island – there were 401 personal bankruptcies and 313 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended April 30, 2019.  Personal bankruptcies were down 3.4% and consumer proposal filings were up 11.4% as compared to the 12-months ended April 30, 2018.  There were 37 personal bankruptcies and 29 consumer proposal filed in Canada in the month of April 2019.
