July 2015 Personal Bankruptcy & Consumer Proposal Statistics

On September 30, 2015, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian consumer debtors.

Canada - there were 63,898 personal bankruptcies and 56,427 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended July 31, 2015, for average total filings of approximately 10,027 per month.  Personal bankruptcies were down 3.8% and consumer proposal filings were up 9.5% as compared to the 12-months ended July 31, 2014.

New Brunswick- there were 2,962 personal bankruptcies and 1,438 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended July 31, 2015, for average total filings of approximately 366 per month.  Personal bankruptcies were up 2.8% and consumer proposal filings were up 15.3% as compared to the 12-months ended July 31, 2014.

Nova Scotia- there were 3,709 personal bankruptcies and 1,506 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended July 31, 2015, for average total filings of approximately 434 per month.  Personal bankruptcies were up 4.5% and consumer proposal filings were up 1.3% as compared to the 12-months ended July 31, 2014.

Prince Edward Island- there were 512 personal bankruptcies and 271 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended July 31, 2015, for average total filings of approximately 65 per month.  Personal bankruptcies were up 8% and consumer proposal filings were up 27.8% as compared to the 12-months ended July 31, 2014.
