October 2015 Bankruptcy & Consumer Proposal Statistics

On December 31, 2015, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics onbankruptcy and proposal filings for Canadian consumer debtors.

Canada - there were 63,317 personal bankruptcies and 57,106 proposals filed in the 12-months ended October 31, 2015 for average total filings of approximately 10,035per month. Bankruptcies were down 2.7% and proposal filings were up 8.8% as compared to the 12-months ended October 31, 2014.

New Brunswick - there were 2,884 personal bankruptcies and 1,488 proposals filed in the 12-months ended October 31, 2015 for average total filings of approximately 364 per month. Bankruptcies were down 2.4% and proposal filings were up 18% as compared to the 12-months ended October 31, 2014.

Nova Scotia - there were 3,636 personal bankruptcies and 1,516 proposals filed in the 12-months ended October 31, 2015 for average total filings of approximately 429 per month. Bankruptcies were down 0.2% and proposal filings were up 3.1% as compared to the 12-months ended October 31, 2014.

Prince Edward Island - there were 484 personal bankruptcies and 289 proposals filed in the 12-months ended October 31, 2015 for average total filings of approximately 64 per month. Bankruptcies were down 6.9% and proposal filings were up 37.6% as compared to the 12-months ended October 31, 2014.
