September 2018 - Personal Bankruptcy & Consumer Proposal Statistics

On November 23, 2018, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian debtors.

Canada - there were 55,468 personal bankruptcies and 67,923 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended September 30, 2018.  Personal bankruptcies were down 6.3% and consumer proposal filings were up 7.6% as compared to the 12-months ended September 30, 2017.  There were 4,477 personal bankruptcies and 5,528 consumer proposal filed in Canada in the month of September 2018.

New Brunswick - there were 2,241 personal bankruptcies and 2,147 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended September 30, 2018.  Personal bankruptcies were down 14.3% and consumer proposal filings were up 18.4% as compared to the 12-months ended September 30, 2017.  There were 198 personal bankruptcies and 184 consumer proposal filed in New Brunswick in the month of September 2018.

Nova Scotia - there were 3,483 personal bankruptcies and 2,049 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended September 30, 2018.  Personal bankruptcies were down 12.6% and consumer proposal filings were up 9.9% as compared to the 12-months ended September 30, 2017.  There were 293 personal bankruptcies and 145 consumer proposal filed in Nova Scotia in the month of September 2018.

Prince Edward Island - there were 413 personal bankruptcies and 298 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended September 30, 2018.  Personal bankruptcies were down 2.1% and consumer proposal filings were up 7.6% as compared to the 12-months ended September 30, 2017.  There were 25 personal bankruptcies and 18 consumer proposal filed in Canada in the month of September 2018.
