September 2015 Personal Bankruptcy & Consumer Proposal Statistics

On November 30, 2015, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian consumer debtors.

Canada - there were 63,722 personal bankruptcies and 56,909 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended September 30, 2015, for average total filings of approximately 10,052 per month.  Personal bankruptcies were down 2.9% and consumer proposal filings were up 9.2% as compared to the 12-months ended September 30, 2014.

New Brunswick - there were 2,928 personal bankruptcies and 1,471 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended September 30, 2015, for average total filings of approximately 351 per month.  Personal bankruptcies were up 1.5% and consumer proposal filings were up 14.8% as compared to the 12-months ended August 31, 2014.

Nova Scotia - there were 3,653 personal bankruptcies and 1,516 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended September 30, 2015, for average total filings of approximately 431 per month.  Personal bankruptcies were up 1.4% and consumer proposal filings were up 4% as compared to the 12-months ended September 30, 2014.

Prince Edward Island - there were 479 personal bankruptcies and 274 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended September 30, 2015, for average total filings of approximately 63 per month.  Personal bankruptcies were down 5.9% and consumer proposal filings were up 28.6% as compared to the 12-months ended September 30, 2014.
