December 2019 – Personal Bankruptcy & Consumer Proposal Statistics
On February 10, 2020, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian debtors.
Canada – there were 54,409 personal bankruptcies and 82,769 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended December 31, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were down 1.2% and consumer proposal filings were up 17.9% as compared to the 12-months ended December 31, 2018. There were 3,917 personal bankruptcies and 6,217 consumer proposals filed in Canada in the month of December 2019.
New Brunswick – there were 2,343 personal bankruptcies and 2,508 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended December 31, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were up 3.6% and consumer proposal filings were up 13.1% as compared to the 12-months ended December 31, 2018. There were 147 personal bankruptcies and 189 consumer proposals filed in New Brunswick in the month of December 2019.
Nova Scotia – there were 3,193 personal bankruptcies and 2,847 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended December 31, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were down 8.3% and consumer proposal filings were up 34.8% as compared to the 12-months ended December 31, 2018. There were 222 personal bankruptcies and 253 consumer proposals filed in Nova Scotia in the month of December 2019.
Prince Edward Island – there were 386 personal bankruptcies and 363 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended December 31, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were down 9.4% and consumer proposal filings were up 19% as compared to the 12-months ended December 31, 2018. There were 32 personal bankruptcies and 25 consumer proposals filed in Canada in the month of December 2019.
