October 2019 – Personal Bankruptcy & Consumer Proposal Statistics
On November 29, 2019, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian debtors.
Canada – there were 54,510 personal bankruptcies and 80,972 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended October 31, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were down 1.9% and consumer proposal filings were up 17.7% as compared to the 12-months ended October 31, 2018. There were 5,127 personal bankruptcies and 8,073 consumer proposals filed in Canada in the month of October 2019.
New Brunswick – there were 2,391 personal bankruptcies and 2,497 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended October 31, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were up 6.2% and consumer proposal filings were up 14.8% as compared to the 12-months ended October 31, 2018. There were 225 personal bankruptcies and 244 consumer proposals filed in New Brunswick in the month of October 2019.
Nova Scotia – there were 3,280 personal bankruptcies and 2,684 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended October 31, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were down 5.9% and consumer proposal filings were up 30.1% as compared to the 12-months ended October 31, 2018. There were 298 personal bankruptcies and 305 consumer proposals filed in Nova Scotia in the month of October 2019.
Prince Edward Island – there were 386 personal bankruptcies and 361 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended October 31, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were down 6.2% and consumer proposal filings were up 14.8% as compared to the 12-months ended October 31, 2018. There were 34 personal bankruptcies and 43 consumer proposals filed in Canada in the month of October 2019.
