August 2019 – Personal Bankruptcy & Consumer Proposal Statistics
On October 4, 2019, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian debtors.
Canada – there were 54,230 personal bankruptcies and 77,763 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended August 31, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were down 2.9% and consumer proposal filings were up 14.9% as compared to the 12-months ended August 31, 2018. There were 4,492 personal bankruptcies and 6,792 consumer proposals filed in Canada in the month of August 2019.
New Brunswick – there were 2,359 personal bankruptcies and 2,410 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended August 31, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were up 5.6% and consumer proposal filings were up 13.6% as compared to the 12-months ended August 31, 2018. There were 208 personal bankruptcies and 192 consumer proposals filed in New Brunswick in the month of August 2019.
Nova Scotia – there were 3,346 personal bankruptcies and 2,479 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended August 31, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were down 5.1% and consumer proposal filings were up 20.3% as compared to the 12-months ended August 31, 2018. There were 295 personal bankruptcies and 232 consumer proposals filed in Nova Scotia in the month of August 2019.
Prince Edward Island – there were 390 personal bankruptcies and 345 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended August 31, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were down 7.6% and consumer proposal filings were up 14.6% as compared to the 12-months ended August 31, 2018. There were 31 personal bankruptcies and 35 consumer proposals filed in Canada in the month of August 2019.
