February 2019 – Personal Bankruptcy & Consumer Proposal Statistics
On April 3, 2019, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian debtors.
Canada – there were 54,893 personal bankruptcies and 71,567 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended February 28, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were down 5.7% and consumer proposal filings were up 14.3% as compared to the 12-months ended February 28, 2018. There were 4,099 personal bankruptcies and 6,204 consumer proposals filed in Canada in the month of February 2019.
New Brunswick – there were 2,312 personal bankruptcies and 2,297 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended February 28, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were up 22.8% and consumer proposal filings were up 23.5% as compared to the 12-months ended February 28, 2018. There were 151 personal bankruptcies and 184 consumer proposals filed in New Brunswick in the month of February 2019.
Nova Scotia – there were 3,455 personal bankruptcies and 2,156 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended February 28, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were down 23.8% and consumer proposal filings were down 5.5% as compared to the 12-months ended February 28, 2018. There were 214 personal bankruptcies and 173 consumer proposals filed in Nova Scotia in the month of February 2019.
Prince Edward Island – there were 416 personal bankruptcies and 316 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended February 28, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were down 43.8% and consumer proposal filings were up 50% as compared to the 12-months ended February 28, 2018. There were 27 personal bankruptcies and 27 consumer proposals filed in Canada in the month of February 2019.
