January 2020 – Personal Bankruptcy & Consumer Proposal Statistics
On March 2, 2020, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian debtors.
Canada – there were 54,217 personal bankruptcies and 84,017 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended January 31, 2020. Personal bankruptcies were down 1.7% and consumer proposal filings were up 18.7% as compared to the 12-months ended January 31, 2019. There were 3,840 personal bankruptcies and 7,189 consumer proposals filed in Canada in the month of January 2020.
New Brunswick – there were 2,336 personal bankruptcies and 2,556 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended January 31, 2020. Personal bankruptcies were up 2.3% and consumer proposal filings were up 13.0% as compared to the 12-months ended January 31, 2019. There were 145 personal bankruptcies and 239 consumer proposals filed in New Brunswick in the month of January 2020.
Nova Scotia – there were 3,132 personal bankruptcies and 2,861 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended January 31, 2020. Personal bankruptcies were down 11.1% and consumer proposal filings were up 32.1% as compared to the 12-months ended January 31, 2019. There were 202 personal bankruptcies and 217 consumer proposals filed in Nova Scotia in the month of January 2020.
Prince Edward Island – there were 381 personal bankruptcies and 364 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended January 31, 2020. Personal bankruptcies were down 12.8% and consumer proposal filings were up 18.6% as compared to the 12-months ended January 31, 2019. There were 30 personal bankruptcies and 23 consumer proposals filed in Canada in the month of January 2020.
