On August 14, 2019, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian debtors.

Canada – there were 54,258 personal bankruptcies and 75,270 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended June 30, 2019.  Personal bankruptcies were down 2.8% and consumer proposal filings were up 12.7% as compared to the 12-months ended June 30, 2018.  There were 4,322 personal bankruptcies and 6,594 consumer proposals filed in Canada in the month of June 2019.

New Brunswick – there were 2,363 personal bankruptcies and 2,398 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended June 30, 2019.  Personal bankruptcies were up 4.7% and consumer proposal filings were up 16.4% as compared to the 12-months ended June 30, 2018.  There were 198 personal bankruptcies and 258 consumer proposals filed in New Brunswick in the month of June 2019.

Nova Scotia – there were 3,386 personal bankruptcies and 2,349 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended June 30, 2019.  Personal bankruptcies were down 5.6% and consumer proposal filings were up 13.9% as compared to the 12-months ended June 30, 2018.  There were 304 personal bankruptcies and 251 consumer proposals filed in Nova Scotia in the month of June 2019.

Prince Edward Island – there were 387 personal bankruptcies and 338 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended June 30, 2019.  Personal bankruptcies were down 7.6% and consumer proposal filings were up 14.2% as compared to the 12-months ended June 30, 2018.  There were 28 personal bankruptcies and 34 consumer proposals filed in Canada in the month of June 2019.
