March 2019 – Personal Bankruptcy & Consumer Proposal Statistics
On May 13, 2019, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian debtors.
Canada – there were 54,704 personal bankruptcies and 72,404 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended March 31, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were down 3.9% and consumer proposal filings were up 12.9% as compared to the 12-months ended March 31, 2018. There were 4,645 personal bankruptcies and 7,318 consumer proposal filed in Canada in the month of March 2019.
New Brunswick – there were 2,329 personal bankruptcies and 2,295 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended March 31, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were up 8.5% and consumer proposal filings were down 1.0% as compared to the 12-months ended March 31, 2018. There were 217 personal bankruptcies and 191 consumer proposal filed in New Brunswick in the month of March 2019.
Nova Scotia – there were 3,472 personal bankruptcies and 2,207 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended March 31, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were up 6.0% and consumer proposal filings were up 28.3% as compared to the 12-months ended March 31, 2018. There were 299 personal bankruptcies and 231 consumer proposal filed in Nova Scotia in the month of March 2019.
Prince Edward Island – there were 406 personal bankruptcies and 305 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended March 31, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were down 25.0% and consumer proposal filings were down 26.8% as compared to the 12-months ended March 31, 2018. There were 30 personal bankruptcies and 30 consumer proposal filed in Canada in the month of March 2019.
