May 2019 – Personal Bankruptcy & Consumer Proposal Statistics
On June 27, 2019, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian debtors.
Canada – there were 54,615 personal bankruptcies and 74,471 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended May 31, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were down 2.9% and consumer proposal filings were up 12.1% as compared to the 12-months ended May 31, 2018. There were 5,163 personal bankruptcies and 7,212 consumer proposal filed in Canada in the month of May 2019.
New Brunswick – there were 2,348 personal bankruptcies and 2,327 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended May 31, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were up 2.5% and consumer proposal filings were up 14.6% as compared to the 12-months ended May 31, 2018. There were 228 personal bankruptcies and 197 consumer proposal filed in New Brunswick in the month of May 2019.
Nova Scotia – there were 3,410 personal bankruptcies and 2,290 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended May 31, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were down 5.3% and consumer proposal filings were up 14.2% as compared to the 12-months ended May 31, 2018. There were 294 personal bankruptcies and 254 consumer proposal filed in Nova Scotia in the month of May 2019.
Prince Edward Island – there were 392 personal bankruptcies and 327 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended May 31, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were down 8.0% and consumer proposal filings were up 12.4% as compared to the 12-months ended May 31, 2018. There were 35 personal bankruptcies and 39 consumer proposal filed in Canada in the month of May 2019.
