November 2019 – Personal Bankruptcy & Consumer Proposal Statistics
On January 9, 2020, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy released its most current statistics on personal bankruptcy and consumer proposal filings for Canadian debtors.
Canada – there were 54,344 personal bankruptcies and 81,639 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended November 30, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were down 1.9% and consumer proposal filings were up 17.4% as compared to the 12-months ended November 30, 2018. There were 4,484 personal bankruptcies and 7,337 consumer proposals filed in Canada in the month of November 2019.
New Brunswick – there were 2,374 personal bankruptcies and 2,478 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended November 30, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were up 4.4% and consumer proposal filings were up 11.6% as compared to the 12-months ended November 30, 2018. There were 197 personal bankruptcies and 200 consumer proposals filed in New Brunswick in the month of November 2019.
Nova Scotia – there were 3,211 personal bankruptcies and 2,740 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended November 30, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were down 8.3% and consumer proposal filings were up 31.8% as compared to the 12-months ended November 30, 2018. There were 226 personal bankruptcies and 246 consumer proposals filed in Nova Scotia in the month of November 2019.
Prince Edward Island – there were 388 personal bankruptcies and 366 consumer proposals filed in the 12-months ended November 30, 2019. Personal bankruptcies were down 6.1% and consumer proposal filings were up 22.8% as compared to the 12-months ended November 30, 2018. There were 37 personal bankruptcies and 33 consumer proposals filed in Canada in the month of November 2019.
